On Wednesday October 19th, the EU projects CityChlor and Upsoil organized a workshop entitled "Integrating in situ remediation technologies into land use cycles" in collaboration with Hombre. The focus laid on understanding both land use cycles in terms of how brownfields evolve and are redeveloped as well as speaking technically on the integration of soil remediation into these cycles. The goal of the workshop was fruitful discussion and interaction between different parties within the soil remediation field, such as academic institutions, local and national government, research institutes, consultancies, and contractors. The day's chairman, professor Huub Rijnaarts, mediated and stimulated discussion throughout the day. Professor Rijnaarts reincorporated themes from previous presentations into the discussion, thereby better integrating the ideas of the day's program.

The workshop started with an introduction to "Circular Land Use Cycles" by Uwe Ferber. In the morning there was also a technical program with presentations by Pauline van Gaans on "Smart ISCO Application", Nora Sutton on "Coupling ISCO and Bioremediation", and Hauke Smidt on "Monitoring Bioremediation with Molecular Tools".
In the afternoon, the practical applications of in situ remediation were highlighted in presentations by Ole Stubdrup on "Innovative ISCO Injection Technology" and by Jan Frank Mars and Shakti Lieten on "Bio-washing machine at Utrecht Central Station".

The location of the workshop at Hoog Catharijne allowed for a tour of current redevelopment coupled to soil remediation at Utrecht Central Station. After a dynamic presentation by Tjerk van Impelen on the redevelopment plans in Utrecht, tours of the current projects were given by van Impelen, Jan Frank Mars and Albert de Vries. This tour, in combination with the presentation by Mars and Lieten, provided a clear example of the workshop's title.

The workshop's success can be measured on many levels: discussion and exchange between different entities in the soil remediation field, clarity of themes and presentations, collaboration between EU projects, introduction of new technologies, conveyance of subjects on theoretical and practical levels, and integration of similar concepts throughout the day. We thank all parties that made the day such a success.
